The Pure Movement Dance Institute Dress Code


The PMDI dress code is a color coded leotard and flesh toned convertible tights (must match ballet shoes) for every class.
Please find a complete list of dress code requirements below for each section and technique. Leotards, tights and dance shorts can be purchased at "Dancewares". They have a complete listing of our requirements by class and will be able to get you everything you need by telling them the studio name and class(es). 
Leotard Color Requirement: (by class section)
Pink Camisole

  • Pre-School/Kindergarten (3-5 years)
Copen Blue Camisole
  • 1st Grade (6 years)
  • 2nd Grade (7 years)
Violet Camisole
  • Academy 3rd Grade (8 years)
  • Academy 4th Grade (9 years)
Black Camisole
  • Elite Studio Level (10-13 years) - no prerequisites for primary classes
  • Advanced Trainee & Institute Level (11-18 years) - students who take at minimum 160-340 minutes of ballet weekly
  • Dancers at this level of training may wear a ballet skirt of their choice.
Boys (all ages)
  • Fitted white shirt
  • Black jazz pants
​Classes that include any of the following styles require black dance shorts (except Pre-K/Kindergarten):
 Acro, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, Hip Hop, Modern and Company. Black dance shorts are not allowed during ballet technique classes.
Shoe Requirements: (varies by class section and technique)
​Pre-School/Kindergarten: Flesh tone canvas ballet slippers and black patent leather tap shoes. Boys are required to have black ballet slippers and black lace up tap shoes.
1st and 2nd Grade: Flesh tone canvas ballet slippers, black patent leather tap shoes, and tan jazz boots. Boys are required to have black ballet slippers, black lace up tap shoes, and black jazz boots.
Acro (age groups vary): No shoes
Academy 3rd and 4th Grade, Elite Studio, Advanced Trainee and Advanced Institute require the following shoes based on technique:
  • Ballet: Flesh tone canvas ballet slippers; Black ballet slippers for boys
  • Tap: Black tap boots
  • Jazz: Tan jazz boots; Black jazz boots for boys
  • Hip Hop: TBD; please come to class the first day with jazz shoes or clean sneakers (sneakers cannot be worn on the street).
  • Lyrical: Tan jazz boots or *only if noted by director/instructor* Capezio canvas half soles (multiple skin tones available)
  • Modern: No shoes
  • Pointe/Demi-Pointe: All pointe and demi-pointe shoes must be go through a fitting and approval process with Ms. Bree prior to ANY work in them.
